River Villa Retreats Guide is an independent journal about private villas and unhurried, considered travel across Bali, Indonesia and the wider region. It started the way most good things do — out of frustration. Too many villa write-ups read like brochures, all infinity pools and adjectives, with nothing you could actually use when it came time to book.
This is the antidote. Every guide here is written from the point of view of someone who has stayed in these places, worked out where the value is, and learned which questions to ask before handing over a deposit. We care about the unglamorous details — how far the beach really is, who's on staff, what the all-in cost comes to — because those are the things that decide whether a stay is a joy or a chore.
The guide is written by T. Marsh, who has spent years moving between villas across Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud and beyond, and who still believes the best luxury is the kind you barely notice — a breakfast that simply appears, a garden that frames the pool, a manager who fixes the problem before you've finished describing it. The tone here is honest and hands-on, never sponsored into softness.
You'll find area orientations for Bali's key villa neighbourhoods, practical framework pieces on choosing and packing, and a running series on villa living itself — staff, private chefs, gardens and service. Every so often we wander further afield, to Singapore or across the archipelago, because the best trips rarely stop at a single island.
We're independent, and we intend to stay that way. If you've stayed somewhere that changed your mind about villa travel, or you spot something we've got wrong, we'd genuinely like to hear it. Write to us at [email protected] — the inbox is read by a real person.
